What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is dinitrogen monoxide, a colorless and odorless (greenhouse) gas. When used improperly, the effect is similar to other illegal drugs.
The use of nitrous oxide among young people has increased significantly in recent years, driven by social media and the supposed harmlessness of the psychoactive effect. However, the "kick" hides a number of significant health risks.
Health side effects and long-term damage caused by nitrous oxide consumption
Nitrous oxide can reach temperatures as low as -55 degrees when consumed directly from the cartridge - there is a risk of severe frostbite to the mouth and throat as well as tears in the lung tissue.
In addition to "classic" symptoms of drug use, such as psychological dependence or tolerance development, the use of laughing gas can cause side effects, including drowsiness, hallucinations, dizziness and headaches.
Regular use of laughing gas can lead to severe nerve damage (including numbness, gait disorders), which is caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency promoted by its use. Even with occasional use, these risks cannot be ruled out.
Combination with other substances
Nitrous oxide use becomes particularly dangerous when combined with other drugs such as cannabis, GHB or ketamine. These combinations can lead to a severe drop in blood pressure, unconsciousness and even death.
How you can protect young people
Educate young people about the risks and support them in making the right decisions. Encourage teens to develop responsible behavior and discuss ways to say "no" when confronted with nitrous oxide and other drugs.
